Portfolio Stress Test: 5 Scenarios That Will Break Your Portfolio
Learn how to stress test your crypto portfolio against historical crashes, exchange failures, and black swan events before they happen.
Introduction: The $400,000 Lesson
November 2022. FTX collapsed. I had $180,000 on the exchange. Not because I was reckless. Because I thought I was diversified—across coins, not across custody.
I got 38 cents on the dollar back. Eventually. The bankruptcy process is still ongoing in 2026.
That loss taught me something no backtest could: You don't know your portfolio's breaking point until you test it.
Stress testing isn't about predicting the future. It's about discovering your portfolio's fragility before the market does. This guide shows you five scenarios every crypto investor must model.
Where the Market Actually Is (April 2026)
- Bitcoin: $87,000 (post-ATH correction from $102K)
- DeFi TVL: $120B+ (all-time high)
- ETF Holdings: 6% of BTC supply
- H1 2025 Breaches: $2.37 billion
- ByBit Hack: $1.5 billion (February 2025)
- Exchange Failures Since 2022: FTX, Celsius, Voyager, BlockFi, Genesis
- Recovery Rate for Failed Exchange Assets: 30-60 cents on dollar (2-5 year timeline)
The market has matured. The risks have evolved. Most portfolios haven't.
What Is Portfolio Stress Testing?
Stress testing applies extreme but plausible scenarios to your portfolio to measure:
- Maximum drawdown: How much could you lose?
- Recovery time: How long to break even?
- Liquidity capacity: Can you actually exit?
- Concentration exposure: Which positions hurt most?
- Correlation breakdown: Does diversification work when you need it?
The Goal: Know your portfolio's breaking points before the market discovers them.
The 5 Scenarios Every Crypto Portfolio Must Test
Scenario 1: The 2022-Style Crypto Winter
Historical Reference: November 2021 - November 2022
What Happened:
- BTC: $69,000 → $15,500 (-77%)
- ETH: $4,850 → $880 (-82%)
- SOL: $260 → $8 (-97%)
- Total crypto market cap: $3T → $800B (-73%)
- Major tokens: 80-95% drawdowns
The Cascade:
- Terra/Luna collapse (May 2022)
- Celsius, Voyager, BlockFi failures (June-July 2022)
- FTX collapse (November 2022)
- Genesis, 3AC contagion
Apply This to Your Portfolio:
Calculate your expected loss in a similar scenario:
If BTC drops 77%:
- Your BTC position: $X × 0.23 = New value
If ETH drops 82%:
- Your ETH position: $Y × 0.18 = New value
If altcoins drop 90%:
- Your alt positions: $Z × 0.10 = New value
Total portfolio impact: (X×0.23 + Y×0.18 + Z×0.10) / Total PortfolioExample: $100K portfolio ($40K BTC, $30K ETH, $30K alts)
- BTC loss: $40K × 0.77 = $30,800 loss
- ETH loss: $30K × 0.82 = $24,600 loss
- Alts loss: $30K × 0.90 = $27,000 loss
- Total loss: $82,400 (82.4% drawdown)
- Remaining: $17,600
To recover to $100K: You need +468% gain
The Harsh Math: A 82% loss requires nearly 500% return just to break even. This is why drawdown control matters more than return maximization.
Scenario 2: Exchange Failure (Custody Risk)
Historical References:
- FTX (November 2022): $8-10B in customer assets trapped
- Celsius (July 2022): $4.7B owed to creditors
- Voyager (July 2022): $1.3B in claims
- BlockFi (November 2022): $1B+ exposure
Current State (2026):
- FTX recovery: ~38-50 cents on dollar (2+ years ongoing)
- Celsius: ~60-70 cents on dollar
- Voyager: ~35-45 cents on dollar
Apply This to Your Portfolio:
Audit your custody distribution:
- Exchange A: $____
- Exchange B: $____
- Exchange C: $____
- Self-custody: $____
- DeFi protocols: $____
Calculate single-point-of-failure risk:
If your largest exchange fails tonight:
- Assets trapped: $____
- Recovery estimate (40%): $____
- Immediate loss: $____
- % of total portfolio: ____%
Example: $200K portfolio
- Coinbase: $80K (40%)
- Binance: $50K (25%)
- Self-custody: $70K (35%)
If Coinbase fails:
- Trapped: $80K
- Recovery (40%): $32K
- Immediate loss: $48K (24% of portfolio)
Can you survive a 24% overnight loss? Most can't.
Scenario 3: Stablecoin Depeg (Liquidity Crisis)
Historical References:
- Terra UST (May 2022): $1 → $0.006 in 72 hours
- $18B market cap to $0
- Luna: $40B to $0
- Domino effect across DeFi
- USDC (March 2023): $1 → $0.88 (temporarily)
- SVB collapse exposure
- $3.3B reserve exposure
- Panic spread to DAI (USDC-backed)
Apply This to Your Portfolio:
Map your stablecoin exposure:
- USDT: $____ (Risk: regulatory, transparency)
- USDC: $____ (Risk: banking partners)
- DAI: $____ (Risk: collateral composition)
- Others: $____ (Risk: various)
Calculate depeg impact:
If your largest stable depegs 15%:
- USDC holding: $50K
- Depeg to $0.85
- Immediate loss: $7,500
If you use that stable as collateral:
- Borrowed: $30K against $50K USDC
- USDC drops to $0.85 → collateral value: $42.5K
- LTV crosses threshold → liquidation
- Loss: Position + liquidation penalty
The Hidden Risk: Most DeFi investors don't realize their DAI is effectively USDC exposure because USDC is primary collateral.
Scenario 4: Correlation Spike (When Diversification Fails)
The Phenomenon: During extreme stress, correlations spike toward 1.0.
Historical Data:
- Normal market: BTC-ETH correlation ~0.6
- March 2020 (COVID): Correlation spiked to 0.9+
- May 2022 (Terra collapse): Alt correlations hit 0.95+
- November 2022 (FTX): Everything moved together
Apply This to Your Portfolio:
Test correlation breakdown:
Your "diversified" portfolio: BTC, ETH, SOL, AVAX, 10 DeFi tokens
Normal conditions (assumed correlations):
- BTC moves 10%
- ETH moves 8% (0.8 correlation)
- SOL moves 12% (0.9 correlation with ETH)
- Alts move 15% average (0.7 correlation)
Stress conditions (correlations → 0.9+):
- BTC drops 40%
- ETH drops 38% (not 32%)
- SOL drops 39% (not 48%)
- All alts drop 35-40% (not 50-60%)
The Paradox: Your diversification actually worked against you. Everything fell the same percentage. You would have been better off holding just BTC with lower volatility.
Scenario 5: Smart Contract Exploit (DeFi Risk)
Historical References (2022-2025):
- Ronin (March 2022): $540M stolen
- Wormhole (February 2022): $320M stolen
- Nomad (August 2022): $190M stolen
- ByBit (February 2025): $1.5B stolen (largest ever)
Recovery Rates:
- Post-exploit recovery: 0-30% typically
- Insurance coverage: Rare and limited
- Protocol "make whole" efforts: Vary widely
Apply This to Your Portfolio:
Map your DeFi exposure:
- Lending protocols: $____ (Aave, Compound, etc.)
- DEX liquidity: $____ (Uniswap, Curve, etc.)
- Yield farms: $____
- Bridges: $____ (Wormhole, LayerZero, etc.)
Calculate protocol-specific risk:
For each protocol:
- Amount deposited: $____
- TVL: $____
- Your % of TVL: ____%
- Exploit scenario: -100% of deposited amount
- Recovery (10% average): $____
Example: $30K in a mid-tier lending protocol
- TVL: $50M
- Your position: 0.06% of TVL
- Exploit loss: $30K
- Recovery (10%): $3K
- Net loss: $27K
Critical Question: Can you afford a 100% loss of any DeFi position? If not, reduce size.
How to Build Your Own Stress Test
Step 1: Map Your Full Exposure
Custody Map:
| Location | Amount | % of Portfolio | Failure Impact |
|----------|--------|----------------|----------------|
| Exchange A | $____ | ____% | $____ loss |
| Exchange B | $____ | ____% | $____ loss |
| Self-custody | $____ | ____% | $____ loss |
| DeFi Protocols | $____ | ____% | $____ loss |
Asset Map:
| Asset | Amount | 2022-Style Loss | Exchange Risk | DeFi Risk |
|-------|--------|-----------------|---------------|-----------|
| BTC | $____ | -77% = $____ | $____ | $____ |
| ETH | $____ | -82% = $____ | $____ | $____ |
| Alts | $____ | -90% = $____ | $____ | $____ |
| Stables | $____ | -15% = $____ | $____ | $____ |
Step 2: Calculate Scenario Losses
Scenario 1: 2022-Style Crash
Total Loss = (BTC × 0.77) + (ETH × 0.82) + (Alts × 0.90) + (Stables × 0.15)
Remaining Portfolio = Total Portfolio - Total Loss
Recovery Required % = (Total Loss / Remaining Portfolio) × 100Scenario 2: Exchange Failure
For each exchange:
Loss = Assets on Exchange × (1 - Recovery Rate)
Total Exchange Risk = Sum of all exchange lossesScenario 3: Correlation Spike
Apply correlation-adjusted drawdowns:
- BTC: -40%
- All other assets: -38% (assuming 0.95 correlation)Step 3: Assess Survival Capacity
Critical Thresholds:
- Green Zone: Max drawdown <30% = Can continue strategy
- Yellow Zone: Max drawdown 30-50% = Needs restructuring
- Red Zone: Max drawdown >50% = High probability of behavioral failure (panic selling)
- Black Zone: Max drawdown >70% = Portfolio destruction, years to recover
Step 4: Build Contingency Plans
For each red/black zone scenario, define:
- Warning triggers (what market conditions activate this plan?)
- Action steps (what do you do?)
- Position sizing (reduce exposure to what level?)
- Exit timing (when do you execute?)
Real Stress Test Results (Example Portfolios)
Portfolio A: The "Diversified" Investor
Allocation: $100K across 15 altcoins, 60% on exchanges
| Scenario | Loss | Recovery Needed |
|----------|------|-----------------|
| 2022 Crash | $74K (74%) | +284% |
| Exchange Fail | $24K (24%) | +32% |
| Stable Depeg | $8K (8%) | +9% |
| Correlation Spike | $42K (42%) | +72% |
| DeFi Exploit | $15K (15%) | +18% |
Verdict: Will not survive major stress. The 74% drawdown requires a 284% gain to recover—unlikely to be achieved before behavioral capitulation.
Portfolio B: The Conservative HODLer
Allocation: $100K (50% BTC, 30% ETH, 20% stables), 80% self-custody
| Scenario | Loss | Recovery Needed |
|----------|------|-----------------|
| 2022 Crash | $49K (49%) | +96% |
| Exchange Fail | $8K (8%) | +9% |
| Stable Depeg | $4K (4%) | +4% |
| Correlation Spike | $35K (35%) | +54% |
| DeFi Exploit | $5K (5%) | +5% |
Verdict: Survives most scenarios. 49% drawdown is painful but recoverable. Low exchange exposure limits systemic risk.
Tools for Stress Testing
1. Manual Calculation (Free, Most Accurate)
Use the frameworks above with your actual positions. Takes 1-2 hours. Worth every minute.
2. Portfolio Visualizer
- Backtest against 2022 drawdowns

- Limited to historical data
3. Monte Carlo Simulators
- Run 10,000+ simulated paths
- Generate probability distributions
- Token Metrics, XBTO offer these
4. Scenario Planning Spreadsheets
Build your own:
- Input: Your positions
- Scenarios: 2022-style, exchange failure, depeg
- Output: Loss calculations, recovery requirements
The Mistakes I Made (So You Don't Have To)
Mistake 1: Not Testing Custody Risk
I tested market risk obsessively. Never tested exchange failure. FTX taught me that lesson for $110,000.
Mistake 2: Underestimating Correlation
I held 15 "different" altcoins. They all fell 85% together. Correlation was 0.95 when I needed it to be 0.5.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Recovery Math
An 80% loss doesn't mean "I'll make it back." It means you need 400% returns. That's years of work erased.
Mistake 4: No Contingency Plans
When FTX suspended withdrawals, I panicked. I had no plan. If I'd stress tested beforehand, I would have known my exposure limits and acted calmly.
The Bottom Line
Stress testing isn't pessimism. It's preparation.
The investors who survived 2022 weren't lucky. They were prepared. They knew their breaking points. They sized positions accordingly. They had contingency plans.
I didn't. I learned the hard way.
Now I stress test quarterly. I know exactly how much I can lose in each scenario. I know what I'll do if it happens. That knowledge lets me sleep at night and hold through volatility.
Your portfolio will face stress. It's not a question of if. It's a question of when.
The question is: Will you know your breaking point before the market finds it for you?
*I lost $110,000 in the FTX collapse because I never stress tested custody risk. Don't make my mistake.*
